Frankincense - The King of Oils

Frankincense is often referred to as the King of Oils. It has great significance in our history and is one of my favourite oils. Many of us are familiar with Frankincense. The technical name for Frankincense is olibanum. It is an oil that is derived from dried tree sap. In the King James Bible, it is referred to 17 times. It was one of the three gifts presented to Jesus by the wise men. They were gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense was highly valued in early Israel. It was used in perfumes, medicine and incense. It was valued particularly in the tabernacles where it would be burned regularly. Frankincense has many remarkable properties. One of the benefits of using essential oil blends is that they are holistic. Not only do they work wonders on our skin, but this oil also has an effect on our brain. Frankincense essential oil is the oil of choice for helping with seizures. It aids the oxygenation of the blood going to the brain. One of the molecular ingredients in frankincense is sesquiterpenes which can cross the blood/brain barrier, thereby providing a calming and centering effect on the brain.

One of the most notable properties that stands out to me is its ability to heal and preserve. That has to be an advantage in skin care. In addition, it also has anti-inflammatory properties and regulating properties with regard to hormonal issues or immune system disorders. For now though, other than being a remarkable all round oil, I would like to focus on its role in skin care.

Astringent: Frankincense is a powerful astringent which gives it an ability to minimise the size of pores and and is especially beneficial in oily skin with a toning and tightening effect on the skin.

Healing: When applied regularly, it may help to heal scars, even out skin tone and strengthen skin. Because it is anti-inflammatory, it will assist with any skin conditions such as acne, blemishes and eczema. It can also be beneficial when applied to stretch marks and for healing dry or cracked skin.

This is one of the oils that I do incorporate into my Nourishing Skin Oil as it is suitable for all ages and no matter what your skin type, you will gain benefit from using it.
